海洋天堂 (Ocean Heaven)
Ocean Heaven is a 2010 Chinese/Hong Kong drama film starring martial arts superstar Jet Li, who reportedly will not perform any martial arts within the film.[1] It will also star Taiwanese actress Kwai Lun-mei, who previously starred in Jay Chou’s Secret.
It was announced that it was to be released in spring 2010, but the release date was pushed back to 24 June 2010.
According to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control, one person out of every 110 is born with autism. It follows that China has over 10 million autism patients. David (Wen Zhang) is one of them: he looks absent-minded, repeats other people’s words, swims with amazing ease, keeps everything at home in exact order and maybe he is not totally aware of his mothers death some years ago. Working in an aquarium, Sam Wong (Jet Li) takes tender care of this twenty-two-year-old son of his. With the generous help of the neighbors, the two live happily together. Yet, the father understands very well that in the end, he will have to depart from the world, leaving his son alone and that day will come sooner than everyone is ready to believe.
This film is an ode to a father who is determined to find shelter for his son before it is too late. In the process, the boy achieves a measure of independence necessary for both to let go.
Recommendation: 4.5/5
A very different feel film by Jet Li. A way to allow people understand about autism. Wen Zhang acts well as an autism patient. Billed as the lead actress, Kwai Lun Mei is under-used as an itinerant circus performer who strikes up a friendship with Dafu. Given no back story and smothered in clown face makeup half the time, her interactions with Dafu are too sappy and superficial. Production values are tip-top — besides Doyle, such big names as Joe Hisaishi and Yee Chung Man provide quality music and production design respectively without overwhelming this small drama with excessive stylization.
