Books spree… ~ Tee Hee ~

~ Tee Hee ~

Yesterday, I went on a shoes spree.

And today, it's books spree. Kinokuniya is currently having 20% off for members from today to Sunday. So I grabbed 2 books.

Michelle introduced this book to me. The Time Traveler's Wife.

The Time Traveler's Wife, published in 2003, is Audrey Niffenegger's debut novel. It is a love story centering on a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to unpredictably time travel, and his wife, an artist who has to cope with his frequent absences and dangerous experiences. The story is a metaphor for the failed relationships of Niffeneger herself, who was frustrated in love when she began the work. The tale's central relationship came to her in a flash one day and subsequently became the novel's title. The novel has been classified as science fiction, as romance, and as a "timeslip romance". The work examines issues of love, loss, and free will. In particular, it uses time travel to explore miscommunication and distance in relationships. However, it also investigates deeper existential questions. As a first-time novelist, Niffenegger had trouble finding a literary agent. She eventually sent the novel to MacAdam/Cage unsolicited and, after an auction took place for the rights, Niffenegger selected them as her publisher. It became a bestseller after an endorsement from author and family friend Scott Turow on The Today Show, and as of March 2009 had sold 2.5 million copies. Reviewers were impressed with her unique perspective on time travel and praised her characterization of the couple, particularly their emotional depth, while at times criticizing Niffenegger's melodramatic writing style. The novel won the Exclusive Books Boeke Prize and a British Book Award. A film version is scheduled to be released in August 2009.

Seems like a film is going to be released. Therefore, I still have 3 months to complete the book.

I got The Private Papers of Eastern Jewel.

Seductive, racy and completely original, the intoxicating tale of a Chinese princess turned Japanese spy.

At the tender age of eight, Eastern Jewel peeps in fascination from behind a screen as her lusty father seduces a fourteen-year-old servant with bound feet. Peculiar feelings are aroused in the unruly girl, who by the end of her life will have spied professionally on politicians, members of the Shanghainese underworld and the last emperor Pu Yi himself, and lived out her sexual fantasies with men (and women) all over the Far East.

The daughter of Prince Su's last concubine, Eastern Jewel is an intoxicating heroine – a feisty, rebellious woman who refuses to accept mutely the docile, subservient role that early twentieth-century Chinese society prescribes for her. Her thirst for excitement and controversy sees her banished as a child from her beloved mother's protection to live with distant relatives in Tokyo. She grows to adore vibrant Japan, but her insatiable appetites naturally lead her into trouble, and this time the punishment is harsher – a sojourn in bleak, freezing Mongolia and a forced marriage to a highly unsuitable husband. And all this before she is twenty, with the real dramas of her life still to come.

Eastern Jewel craves freedom and will not be pinned down by anyone, least of all a man. And yet, though she seeks out experiences unlike other women's, and influence beyond the reach of most men, there remains a gaping absence in her heart, a place haunted at night by troubling thoughts.

Seductive, racy and completely original, The Private Papers of Eastern Jewel is an eye-opening and gripping re-telling of the real life of a fascinating but contradictory woman, a heroine who battled to juggle her extraordinary public life with her private paper demons.

Headed to Popular after I went to the doctor. I was suffering from a migraine, sore throat and sniffing nose the whole day though. I got 2 more books anyway.

The Gift. I have been hunting this book by Cecilia Ahern. Now I found it!

If you could wish for one gift this Christmas, what would it be?

Everyday Lou Suffern battled with the clock. He always had two places to be at the same time. He always had two things to do at once. When asleep he dreamed. In between dreams, he ran through the events of the day while making plans for the next. When at home with his wife and family, his mind was always someplace else.

On his way into work one early winter morning, Lou meets Gabe, a homeless man sitting outside the office building. Intrigued by him and on discovering that he could also be very useful to have around, Lou gets Gabe a job in the post room.

But soon Lou begins to regret helping Gabe. His very presence unsettles Lou and how does Gabe appear to be in two places at the same time?

As Christmas draws closer, Lou starts to understand the value of time. He sees what is truly important in life yet at the same time he learns the harshest lesson of all.

This is a story about people who not unlike parcels, hide secrets. They cover themselves in layers until the right person unwraps them and discovers what's inside.S ometimes you have to be unravelled in order to find out who you really are. For Lou Suffern, that took time.

Randomly saw this book, The Memory Keeper's Daughter & it just attracted me to purchase it. Upon doing research, I just released that there was a made-for-television movie premiered on April 12, 2008. The movie was watched by 5,822,000 viewers and received a 4.0 household rating. The movie was also the most watched show on cable for the week of April 7-April 13 2008. The film's DVD release was in October 2008. Oh well, I wasn't aware. =X

The Memory Keeper's Daughter is a novel by American author Kim Edwards that tells the story of a man who abandons his newborn baby, who has Down syndrome. Published by Viking Press in June 2005, the novel garnered great interest via word of mouth in the summer of 2006 and placed on the New York Times Paperback Bestsellers List.[1] The novel was adapted to telemovie and broadcast on Lifetime Television in April 2008.

March 1964

In 1964, during an unusual Kentucky blizzard, Dr. David Henry is forced to deliver he and his wife Norah's first child, with the help of a nurse; Caroline Gill. Their first child, a boy they name Paul, is born, a visibly perfect child, but it then becomes apparent that Norah is giving birth to twins. When the second baby, a girl, is born; David notices immediately she is a mongoloid (a name given at the time for people with Down syndrome). David, recalling the possiblity of heart complications and thinking of his sister, June, who died young due to a heart defect; decides that Phoebe will be placed in an institution to spare Norah the suffering June's death caused his own mother. Caroline, the nurse – who has been in love with David since the moment she met him – is charged with the task of carrying the infant to the institution. After assessing the wretched conditions of the place, however, she decides to keep and raise the baby herself. Rememering Norah's mention of the names she had chosen for her baby, both for a boy and a girl, Caroline names the baby Phoebe. While Caroline is at the store buying baby supplies, her car battery dies and she is stranded in the snow with Phoebe. She is picked up by a truck driver, Albert "Al" Simpson; who lets her shelter with Phoebe in his truck before driving them to Caroline's home in Lexington, and eventually staying there for the night. Meanwhile, David lies to Norah and tells her that their daughter died at birth; leaving his passive wife plagued by post-natal depression as those around her refuse to let her talk about the daughter she lost, treating her as if she should be satisfied with Paul and forget about Phoebe's 'death'. She decides to hold a memorial for Phoebe, and place an announcement in the paper without David's knowledge – astonished, Caroline seeks David out after reading it, and after hearing that she had kept the baby rather than take her to the institution, he bids her to do what she thinks is right. Caroline refuses the money he offers her, and leaves for Pittsburgh to make fresh start there – with Phoebe.

Angels & Demons

Angels & Demons (also known as Da Vinci Code II: Angels & Demons or just Da Vinci Code II) is a 2009 film adaptation of Dan Brown's novel of the same name, released on May 15, 2009. It is the sequel to The Da Vinci Code (2006), another Brown film adaptation, although the novel Angels & Demons was published and takes place before the novel The Da Vinci Code. Filming took place in Rome and the Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. Tom Hanks reprises the lead role of Robert Langdon, while director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman also returned.

The film starts with the death of the Pope in the Vatican. It then switches off to CERN, a scientific research facility in Geneva, where a research team is experimenting with the creation of antimatter. In this scene, a woman named Vittoria Vetra, a scientist in the research team is introduced. Just moments after the antimatter has been successfully created by the team, the research facility is compromised by an intruder dressed as a scientist who steals the antimatter after murdering one of the individuals guarding it. Robert Langdon, who is a professor at Harvard University is visited by the Vatican police official who tells him that someone has been making threats against the Vatican and has already kidnapped four cardinals (called preferati–Italian for preferred) who were being considered to be the next Pope. The officer also tells Langdon that the kidnapper will begin executing the cardinals every hour starting at 8PM that night. After Langdon comes to Vatican the Vatican police sees the antimatter placed in an undetermined location through a video camera specifically shooting the object that is fed into a surveillance system. After Camerlengo, the assistant to the previous Pope, suggests the idea, the Swiss Guard decide to find the location of the antimatter by systematically shutting off sections of the city's electrical grid and monitoring the surveillance camera to see if it shuts off corresponding to the city sections being shut off. If a section of the city's power has been turned off and the camera also loses power, the theory holds that the camera is located in that section of the city.

Langdon at this point mentions the history between the Illuminati and the Vatican and the conflict that began between them in 1668. According to Langdon, during the 17th century, the Vatican purged Catholics who favored science over creationism. The conflict eventually led to the Illuminati becoming a secret society determined to take vengeance on the Vatican for this incident and because of the Vatican's uncompromising position opposed to the science that the Illuminati stands for. Therefore, Langdon concludes that the threat and kidnapping of the four cardinals has been done by Illuminati to take that revenge by using the antimatter to blow up Vatican City. The antimatter is contained in a battery-powered canister, and as Vittoria explains, when the battery power runs out, the magnetic force keeping the antimatter suspended will shut down and cause the antimatter to react with matter (the canister), thus creating an intense explosion. It would recreate how science believes the universe was created. Langdon then educates the police force about the symbolic meaning of kidnapping four cardinals that the Illuminati's connection to the four pillars of science: earth, water, air and fire. He then deduces that the kidnapper intends to kill each of the kidnapped cardinals using the four pillars. He then receives special permission from Camerlengo to locate clues from old texts in the Vatican archives to find where the church of Illuminati is and in the meantime trying to save the four cardinals from being executed in four different locations. The Camerlengo at this point urges the cardinals to evacuate the Vatican because of the bomb threat but the head of the cardinals refuses, saying that they needed to have faith in God, and also not break the tradition of the conclave. The cardinals are in a conclave in the Sistine Chapel in order to elect the new Pope. Later, the Camerlengo makes a speech to the cardinals about religion and science, saying that they should be more open, and less like the secretive Illuminati.

Meanwhile, through the ancient Illuminati trail created to be hidden from the church, Langdon encounters the first cardinal, already dead by the element of Earth with his hand cuffed behind his back, soil filled in his mouth and the word "earth" branded onto his chest. Langdon discovered he was located at Santa Maria del Popolo, a chapel Raphael once had built, through the poem that the Illuminati left along with their initial threat of killing the four cardinals.

Langdon is led to the next clue when he realizes that, while they were in a chapel built by Raphael, the sculptures it contained were all Bernini This leads him to St. Peter's Square–a place containing many of Bernini's colonades. There he finds the second cardinal, who also dies from the cause of Air outside the St. Peter's Square. As Vetra tries to give him mouth to mouth resuscitation she realizes that the killer had punctured his lungs. The sculpted tile located near where the cardinal died depicted a face blowing air. Langdon follows the direction of the 5 breath marks on the tile.

As he follows the third trail, he finds one of the cardinals dying from fire by burning on top of a flame made up of wooden chairs inside Santa Maria della Vittoria also with a word–"Fire"– hot ironed into his chest. Bernini's Ecstasy of St. Theresa is in the chapel in proximity to the burning man. Langdon and the Swiss Guard try to save him, but the kidnapper foils their attempts by killing all of the police personnel inside the church. Langdon manages to escape the scene by hiding underground. The cardinal dies.

Langdon draws out the previous three locations on a map and cites the line in the terrorist's poem "across Rome" and realizes that, in drawing a cross to connect the places and a church related to water, he has found the next location. He and the police team pursues the next trail to a fountain. As soon as they arrive, they see a van pulled up next to the fountain. As the two officers accompanying Langdon notice something suspicious about the van and approach it, the assassin surprises and kills both, unloads the fourth cardinal tied with weights into the fountain, and drives off. Langdon, with a help of strangers, saves the cardinal who tells him that he was held captive in the Castel Sant'Angelo.  This is the location of the Illuminati church. Langdon then knows where the final operation was to take place and to locate the antimatter before it gets blown up before 12AM that night. As Langdon and the police approaches the location, they see the same van empty and so proceed down to the church of Illuminati. At this point the assassin is at the location and is checking bank account wire transfer information on his laptop. He reads an email that the final wire transfer was successful and that there is a car with a key waiting for him outside. As he prepares to leave, Langdon and Vetra walk in on him. As they look for the clue the assassin appears out of hiding behind a wall and leaves without shooting them, saying that it is because they are not armed, but advises them not to follow him. At that location Langdon realized that there is the fifth branding iron that depicts two keys crossed. Initially, he believes it is a symbol of the papacy. He then thinks that there is going to be a fifth death and is likely to be Camerlengo, the assistant to the late Pope. As Langdon and Vittoria run to save Camerlengo from impending death, they witness the explosion of a car–the one the assassin had been trying to use to escape. They get to the Vatican and find the head of the Swiss Guard, Commander Richter, pointing a gun at Camerlengo. The accompanying police subsequently shoot Richter to death. They also shoot a bishop who enters the room in response to Camerlengo accusing the bishop of being Illuminati. Camerlengo has the fifth symbol freshly and painfully ironed into his chest. They finally locate the antimatter in the St. Peter's tomb in the necropolis under the Vatican. When Vittoria's attempt to diffuse it proves futile, Camerlengo snatches the antimatter and takes it to a helicopter outside and flies with it as high as possible before it gets blown by the timer. Just before the huge detonation in the sky, he parachutes out and lands in St. Peter's Square with a delight of onlookers who seem to admire him for saving Vatican. The explosion is ultraseismic and the resulting several ripple waves throughout the city cause structural and minor injuries.

Next, the cardinals debate whether the Camerlengo should be Pope after hearing about his heroic effort that saved the Vatican. After some deliberation about the age of Camerlengo (who is much younger than the minimum required age), they reach consensus to vote him as a candidate to be the next Pope. While this happens, Langdon and Vetra go through the Commander of the Swiss Guard's desk, since he is now dead, to recover journals that the commander took from Vetra earlier in the movie. The journals were written by the first man–a colleague of Vetra and a Catholic priest–killed by the terrorist. They discover a hidden surveillance system on the Commander's computer and rewind the recording to see that the Camerlengo had plotted everything and had ironed the fifth symbol into his chest himself. Camerlengo is revealed to be much more radically religious than the previous Pope and had become increasingly uncomfortable with the Vatican's increasing openness to science. He had poisoned and killed the previous Pope and tried to appear as the savior of Vatican from the threat from the Illuminati, which he said was trying to destroy the Vatican in the religion and science debate. He made an opposite act to appear as being more open to science in order to unite the Catholic church. When he was in the hospital recovering from injuries he received during the shockwave of the antimatter explosion, he is informed that the conclave of Cardinals wants to see him in the chapel, which he thinks means that he will be voted in as the next Pope. Upon entering the conclave and receiving a stock-still room full of accusatory eyes, he realizes that the Cardinals now know everything. He walks out of the chapel quietly, but is trapped by the Vatican police. Seeing no way of escape, he then immolates himself with candle oil while putting his hands together and saying prayers, and burns to death. Cardinal Baggis–the fourth cardinal and would-be victim of the assassin–is then elected pope and Langdon is given the "Diagramma della Veritas" on indefinite loan to be returned in Langdon's last will and testament. The head of the cardinals reveals to Langdon that they are all imperfect and therefore religion is also imperfect. Knowing Langdon's dissatisfaction or disagreements with the church, he also advises Langdon that in his impending publication, any mention of the Catholic church should be made "gently", just as he had instructed the seizure of Carmelengo should be carried out.

Recommendation: Depending on whether you have read the book.

When you are deciding whether or not to go see this movie you should ask yourself, "have I read the book?" If your answer is a NO, then by all means, you should go and watch this action-packed thriller cos I guess, it will keep you in suspense and jolly well, guess what is going to happen next. Or even slightly confused. A great movie for both genders, I would say. If you have read the book, then I guess you will need to reconsider. After all, remember Da Vinci Code? The book is better than the movie. Therefore, I am lucky enough not to read the book though I had the whole set. & now, off I am to read the book. CHEERS! Anyway, Tom Hank is still as good!& also, enjoy the beautiful scenes. NOW, make me feel like going to Rome.

Star Trek

Star Trek is a 2009 science fiction film directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It is the eleventh film based on the Star Trek franchise and features the main characters of the original Star Trek series, who are portrayed by a new cast. The film introduces a parallel universe/alternate timelinecontinuity of the original series and the previous movies.[4] It explores the previously unexplored backstories of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), before they unite aboard the USS Enterprise to combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from the future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. Released to traditional and IMAX theaters, the film debuted internationally (with some advance showings in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States) on May 7, 2009, and was widely released in North America, Brazil, Ireland and the United Kingdom on May 8, 2009. separate from the

Development of the film began in 2005 when Paramount Pictures contacted Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman for ideas to revive the franchise. The creative team contrasted Orci and Lindelof, who consider themselves "Trekkies", with casual fans like Abrams, who all aimed to create a film that would interest a general audience. They wanted to be faithful to the Star Trek canon, but they also introduced elements of their favorite novels, modified continuity with the time travel storyline, and modernized the production design of the original show. Filming took place from November 2007 to March 2008 under intense secrecy. Midway through the shoot, Paramount chose to delay the release date from December 25, 2008 to May 2009, believing the film could reach a wider audience.

In the year 2387, Romulus is threatened by a supernova. Ambassador Spock pilots a Vulcan ship carrying "red matter" which can create a gravitational singularity, drawing the supernova into a black hole. However, Spock is too late, and Romulus is destroyed. Captain Nero of the Romulan mining ship Narada attempts to exact revenge on Spock for letting Romulus be destroyed, but both ships are caught in the black hole's event horizon, traveling into the past and creating an alternate reality from the original Star Trek series. The NaradaFederation starship, the USS Kelvin. As the Kelvin is evacuated, acting-Captain George Kirk is forced to stay behind to provide cover for the fleeing shuttlecraft, dying moments after his son, James Tiberius Kirk, is born. When Ambassador Spock arrives 25 years later, Nero captures his ship and the remaining red matter. Spock is left marooned on the planet Delta Vega near Vulcan so that he may witness the destruction of his homeworld. arrives 153 years before the supernova, and immediately attacks a nearby

After growing up without a father, Kirk has become an intelligent, reckless, and cynical young man. Captain Christopher Pike, dismayed that Kirk is wasting his intelligence on self-destructive behavior, tells him of his late father's heroic efforts and convinces him to join Starfleet. At Starfleet Academy, Kirk befriends fellow cadets Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Uhura. In his third year at the Academy, Kirk is accused of cheating on the Kobayashi Maru test by the test's current programmer, Commander Spock. In the midst of the ensuing hearing, during which Kirk is placed on academic suspension, Starfleet receives a distress signal from Vulcan. The cadets are mobilized to help man the ships in orbit. Acting as his attending physician, Dr. McCoy brings Kirk on board the USS Enterprise, to which both Spock and Uhura have been assigned under Pike's command.

Kirk, recognizing similarities between the distress call from Vulcan and the encounter that destroyed the Kelvin, warns Pike that the fleet is heading into a trap. The Enterprise arrives late, by which time the fleet has been wiped out. The Narada is drilling into Vulcan's core. Nero disables the Enterprise and orders Pike to surrender himself via shuttlecraft. Pike agrees, leaving Spock in command and Kirk as first officer. En route to the Narada, Pike arranges for Kirk, Hikaru Sulu, and Chief Engineer Olsen to perform an orbital skydive onto the drilling platform and destroy it. Olsen is killed, but Kirk and Sulu stop the drill. However, it has already reached the planet's core, and Nero launches red matter into the core, collapsing the planet into a black hole. Spock rescues most of the planet's elders, including his father, but his mother dies, along with nearly six billion Vulcans. Spock estimates only ten thousand Vulcans are left. Nero intends to do the same to Earth, and tortures Pike for the command codes to Earth's perimeter defenses.

Kirk attempts to convince Spock to travel to Earth to stop Nero, but Spock maroons him on Delta Vega and orders the ship to rendezvous with the rest of the fleet. On Delta Vega, Kirk encounters the elderly Ambassador Spock, who relays the future's events through a mind meld and insists that Kirk must become captain of the Enterprise. The two travel to a nearby Starfleet outpost where they meet the talented Montgomery Scott. Spock helps Scott refine his equations for "transwarp transportation" to allow Kirk and Scott to beam aboard the Enterprise. Kirk manages to anger Spock, forcing him to cede command due to being emotionally compromised. Spock, Scott, and Pavel Chekov devise a plan to bring the Enterprise to Titan and take advantage of Saturn's magnetosphere to disguise their presence, allowing them to beam Kirk and Spock aboard the Narada unnoticed. While Kirk rescues Pike, Spock retakes the future Ambassador Spock's ship, using it to destroy the drill and lure the Narada away from Earth before piloting a collision course into the Narada. The Enterprise arrives and beams Kirk, Pike, and Spock away before the collision, which releases the remaining red matter and creates a black hole within the Narada's superstructure. Kirk offers to help rescue Nero and his crew, but the Romulan refuses. The Narada is torn apart, and the Enterprise narrowly escapes the same fate by igniting the ship's warp drive reactor cores, the resulting explosion pushing them clear.

Kirk is promoted to captain of the Enterprise, relieving the newly promoted but wheelchair-bound Admiral Pike. While searching for his father, Spock encounters his older self in a hangar; Ambassador Spock is departing to help found a new colony for the remaining Vulcans. Spock informs his older self of his intention to leave Starfleet to help in the rebuilding. Ambassador Spock tells his younger self that he and Kirk need each other and that he should remain in Starfleet. Taking his older self's advice, Spock does so, becoming first officer under Kirk's command. As the Enterprise warps away, Leonard Nimoy recites a version of the "Where no man has gone before" monologue.

Recommendation: 4/5 Interesting show. I was expecting an emotionless, shallow action flick, especially after th seeing the trailers. I didn't give much "hope" on the film. BUT, I was seriously wrong. This has far greater emotionel depth as compared to what I had expected. As for the actors, they do fit well, reimagining the characters and feel right for a modernized view of them. Overall, GOOD! Now, it leads me wondering, will Earth be like this many many years down the road? It's kind of boring to be on the spaceship, with no shopping, no movies etc. @_@ But for once, there is 1 thing I would like to have NOW. The beams! I will I can just beam and energize myself to and fro work. Which means I will wake up at 8.45am and reach up at 6.05pm. Well, I will try harder.

The scene that makes me CRY!
