A reminder to all: 14 tips to quit nagging

Extracted from Yahoo.

In marriage, or any partnership, chores are a huge source of conflict. How do you get your sweetheart to hold up his or her end, without nagging?

One of my best friends from college has a very radical solution: she and her husband don’t assign. That’s right. They never say, “Get me a diaper,” “The trash needs to go out,” etc. This only works because neither one of them is a slacker, but still — what a tactic! And they have three children!

This is something to strive for. But even if we can’t reach that point, most of us could cut back on the nagging. Here are some strategies that have worked for me:

1. It’s annoying to hear a hectoring voice, so suggest tasks without words. When my husband needs a prescription filled, he puts his empty medicine bottle on the bathroom counter. Then I know to get it re-filled.

2. If you need to voice a reminder, limit yourself to one word. Instead of barking out, “Now remember, I’ve told you a dozen times, stop off at the grocery store, we need milk, if you forget, you’re going right back out!” Instead, call out, “Grocery store!” or “Milk!”

3. Don’t insist that a task be done on your schedule. “You’ve got to trim those hedges today!” Says who? Try, “When are you planning to trim the hedges?” If possible, show why something needs to be done by a certain time. “Will you be able to trim the hedges before our party next week?”

4. Remind your partner that it’s better to decline a task than to break a promise. My husband told me that he’d emailed some friends to tell them we had to miss their dinner party to go to a family dinner—but he hadn’t. Then I had to cancel at the last minute. Now I tell him, “You don’t have to do it. But tell me, so I can it.”

5. Have clear assignments. I always call repairmen; he always empties the Diaper Genie.

6. Every once in a while, do your sweetheart’s task, for a treat. This kind of pitching-in wins enormous goodwill.

7. Assign chores based on personal priorities. I hate a messy bedroom more than my husband, but he hates a messy kitchen more than I. So I do more tidying in the bedroom, and he does more in the kitchen.

8. Do it yourself. I used to be annoyed because we never had cash in the house. Then I realized: why did I get to assign that job? Now I do it, and we always have cash, and I’m not annoyed.

9. Settle for a partial victory. Maybe your partner won’t put dishes in the dishwasher, but getting them from the family room into the sink is a big improvement.

10. Re-frame: decide that you don't mind doing a chore — like putting clothes in the hamper or hanging up wet towels. Surprisingly, this is easier than you’d think.

11. Don’t push for the impossible. My husband knows that there’s no way I’ll do anything relating to our car, so he doesn’t even ask.

12. No carping from the sidelines. If your partner got the kids dressed, don’t mock the outfits. If you want something done your way, do it yourself.

13. Think about how money might be able to buy some cheap happiness. Could you find a teenager to mow the lawn? Could you hire a weekly cleaning service? Could you buy prepared foods? Eliminating conflict in a relationship is a high happiness priority, so this is a place to spend money if it can help.

14. Remember that messy areas tend to stay messy, and tidy areas tend to stay tidy. If you want your partner to be neat, be neat yourself!

I admit that these tips are practically useless, however, in a situation where one person is absolutely oblivious for the need for chores to be done. I have it easy, because if anything, my husband is more chore-oriented than I am. If a person simply does not care, it’s practically impossible to get him or her to participate.

Kuishin Bo is the first to introduce a new dining concept in Japanese buffet meal, with a wide spread of food including sashimi, seafood, sushi, tempura, teppanyaki, yakitori, mini paper steamboat and soba. The complete meal includes starters, desserts, soft drinks, coffee and tea.

I think the most fantastic item will be the snow crab? Well, I skip it. I never like crabs. It has a weird taste!

& as usual, I feasted on the swordfish sashimi. The amount I ate? It was enough to settle the bills. I just LOVE swordfish. YUM YUM!

Chawanmushi and Cha Soba. The steamed egg in the Chawanmushis were soft and smooth; while the Cha Soba was like any other.

Hot plate dishes were something that the Jurong branch offered over the Teppanyaki dishes but I ate none. Don't you think it's such a waste to eat hot food at a Japanese buffet stall?

The tempura was quite good, especially the ebi prawns. Crisp and juicy. Soft shell crabs taste normal.

Unagi was good. I ate lots. Imagine 1 big piece costs me $14 after discount? I bet I had 1 whole piece so as to make my money worth.

During dinner buffets, the restaurant would play a tune that goes "Dong dong dong 123.." (I'm sure you've made fun of it before) to give out special dishes for the first 30 customers. 'Kiasuism' was overwhelming as the whole string of people literally surged forward in line within seconds, even faster than a fire evacuation. & I skipped this cos I was too full by then.

Desserts
Bite-sized desserts are always good so you could try a much wider variety.

Well, overall so so for that price. We paid $40 all in each and had a $6 discount for early dining before 7pm.

P/S: No pictures cos I was too hungry.

Rewatch KNOWING….

I actually did a review on "Knowing" a week ago.& well, I went to watch cos I was only seeing the pictures all along. I could not figure out what they were talking throughout the whole movie despite me placing my ears 1cm away from the speaker of my laptop.

Still, it's better to watch the show on the big screen.

&, I quite like the movie despite watching it twice. Partly cos I am always a fan of Nicholas Cage.

Many may think that the ending is kind of crappy. YES and NO. In a just-watch-movie view, it's for sure a YES. But if you do serious thoughts, you will understand what does the ending mean. I am the latter, what about you?

Next movie to catch, Angels and Demons

Hong Kong, here I come!

Looking forward to my HK trip!

Therefore, these 2 months, I shall save up more.

Hong Kong, here I come!

I miss the food.

I miss Lan Kwai Fong.
I miss everything of Hong Kong.

Troops occupy area near main Bangkok protest site, ministry building on fire

BANGKOK – Trucks carrying hundreds of Thai troops Monday moved into an area near the prime minister's office in Bangkok, the main site where thousands of protesters have gathered, an AFP photographer said.

Dozens of protesters who had been stationed in the area, Royal Plaza, left quickly as the soldiers moved in and headed towards the central protest centre at Government House less than one kilometre away.

A senior military official confirmed that the troops had moved in, saying that the aim was to "contain protesters in one single spot and prevent more protesters from going in."

He said there were now up to 4,000 protesters in front of Government House.

Meanwhile a building in Thailand's education ministry complex is ablaze after being hit by petrol bombs, a security guard said.

Protesters also seized seven buses and set them on fire in front of the nearby United Nations building, sending flames shooting high into the sky, an AFP reporter saw.

"There were several bomb blasts at 5:00pm (1000 GMT) and suddenly the fire broke out," education ministry security guard Pradap Wongdara told AFP.

"Protesters hurled pavement slabs into the building first and then followed by throwing several molotov cocktails," he added.

The ministry is located next to the Royal Plaza.

Troops deployed in Bangkok amid state of emergency

Extracted from CNA.

BANGKOK : Tanks and armoured vehicles rolled through the streets of Bangkok on Sunday as premier Abhisit Vejjajiva cracked down on anti-government protesters in the most serious crisis yet of his rule.

One day after wrecking a summit of Asian leaders, demonstrators fired into the air and attacked Abhisit's car as he was being driven out of the interior ministry where he had imposed a state of emergency minutes earlier.

"I am safe, not hurt, but one of my officials was detained. I want them to release him so that he can receive treatment as he is injured," Abhisit told one reporter by telephone.

The latest escalation in the country's long-running political turmoil came shortly after police arrested the leader of activists loyal to ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra who had targeted Saturday's summit.

Abhisit earlier said on national television that the government had "tried all along to avoid violence, but the protest has developed and they have used actions incompatible with the constitution".

"Now the government is unable to avoid this state of emergency," he added.

As tanks and soldiers fanned out, television showed red-shirted protesters armed with sticks and paving slabs smashing a car they mistakenly thought was carrying the prime minister and a separate vehicle carrying his deputy, Suthep Thaungsuban.

An army spokesman said troops had been deployed across the capital. An AFP reporter saw a tank and troops standing by on a road in central Bangkok close to government buildings.

"A combined force of army, navy, and air force has been deployed to secure public buildings, intersections and public transportation at 50 spots in Bangkok and its surroundings," Colonel Sunsern Kaewkumnerd told AFP.

"They are armed and we have also deployed armoured cars because protesters have used taxis to block the road," he said.

Protesters took to the streets two weeks ago to push Abhisit to quit but he has refused. They say he came to power illegitimately through a parliamentary vote in December after a court forced Thaksin's allies from government.

The chaos in Bangkok is a virtual replay of crises last year that ended up forcing out two prime ministers loyal to Thaksin – who was himself ousted in a military coup in 2006 – but on those occasions the army refused to act.

The army has traditionally shied away from confronting protesters since action against riots in 1992 left dozens dead, while police moves against anti-Thaksin protesters in October last year left two dead.

The emergency order allows police to clear protesters who regrouped in their thousands Sunday outside Abhisit's office, the interior ministry, and a courtroom where a hearing on the protest leader's detention was due.

It is the third time in eight months that authorities have declared a state of emergency in Bangkok but on previous occasions under governments allied to Thaksin, the army refused to step in.

The emergency measure bans public gatherings of more than five people and empowers police and military to detain suspects for up to 30 days without charge.

Authorities can also enforce strict controls on the media.

Police earlier said they had arrested protest leader Arisman Pongreungrong, a former pop singer, at his Bangkok home "on the charge of inciting protesters to kidnap the prime minister and cause unrest in the country".

Leaders of the so-called "Red Shirts" quickly retorted by saying they would call nationwide rallies if Arisman was not freed.

Abhisit has come under pressure to curb the unrest after the humiliating cancellation of Saturday's Asian summit, after which authorities were forced to evacuate foreign leaders, some of them by helicopter from the hotel roof.

The weekend summit was supposed to discuss the global financial crisis and North Korea's rocket launch and included the leaders of China, Japan and South Korea plus 10 Southeast Asian nations.

Thaksin remains in exile to avoid a two-year jail term for corruption, but has rallied supporters – and incensed the government – with almost nightly video and telephone speeches from an unidentified foreign hideout.

Still safe to go?

DBS CEO Richard Stanley dies from leukaemia infection

Credit to Yahoo.

SINGAPORE: The chief executive of Singapore’s DBS Bank, Richard Stanley, has died from an infection resulting from being treated for leukaemia. He was 48.

Mr Stanley was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukaemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, in late January and had been responding well to treatment.

Just on Wednesday, at the bank’s annual and extraordinary general meeting, DBS chairman Koh Boon Hwee had told shareholders that Mr Stanley was on track to return to work.

But, in a late—night statement on Friday, DBS said Mr Stanley’s condition took a sudden turn for the worse.

It said that after two rounds of chemotherapy earlier this week, his doctors believed his cancer was in remission. But his condition deteriorated rapidly on Friday.

DBS said the unpredictability of the disease has led to severe complications due to infection.

Responding to queries from Channel NewsAsia on Saturday, DBS said Mr Stanley died at 8.36am Saturday, after a brave fight with the disease.

His immediate family was by his side as he slipped away peacefully. Mr Stanley leaves behind his wife Koh Li Peng and three children.

DBS said its staff are deeply saddened and that its thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of bereavement.

Mr Stanley had been on a leave of absence for 3—6 months since he was diagnosed with leukemia.

In its statement on Saturday, DBS said that during his absence, its chairman Koh Boon Hwee took on an active management oversight role.

Mr Koh has been working closely with the senior management team to ensure continued strong leadership.

DBS said this will continue and there will be no change in the bank’s strategic direction.

The bank added the board will announce succession plans in due course.

Mr Koh said that although Mr Stanley had been with DBS for less than a year, he had endeared himself to many people in the bank.

Mr Koh said Mr Stanley also helped strengthen the DBS franchise during a very challenging time for the industry.

"All of us at DBS are deeply saddened by the loss," Mr Koh said. "We will miss Rich and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of bereavement."

During the Lunar New Year earlier this year, Mr Stanley had sought treatment for what appeared to be ordinary flu—like symptoms after experiencing a cough and high fever.

According to doctors, this type of cancer can affect people across all age groups. Symptoms of the disease include tiredness, bone pains, fever and bruising.

Mr Stanley headed Citigroup’s China operations before joining DBS in May last year.

During the short period with DBS, he had already seen the bank through difficult events like the structured notes saga, the announcement of a S$4 billion rights issue and the retrenchment of 900 bank employees.

Before that, he had spent 18 years of his banking career in Asia.

Condolences have been coming in from the financial community on news of Mr Stanley’s demise.

UOB deputy chairman and CEO Wee Ee Cheong said he was deeply saddened by the news.

OCBC Bank CEO David Conner said Mr Stanley was a former colleague, a good friend and a fine man. He added that Mr Stanley was a very capable banker and his passing is a loss to Asia’s banking profession.
